Is the inside of this box damaged?

Or is the loose thread look a style in a box like this? This little beauty looks pretty old although I am not sure exactly when it's from I speculate the early 1900s. I was wondering if the lining in it was ripped out or if that look it has inside it was a design choice PXL_20230102_012716125.jpg PXL_20230102_012653180.jpg PXL_20230102_012642869.jpg

looks like a skein of yarn , placed as a gentle cushion for some treasured object to be placed on it...

You think it isn't connected to the box itself and just placed in there? That could very well be the case! I am scared to damage it so I haven't pulled on it at all

A follow up tells me that it appears to be attached to the box somehow. Most likely glued

Ooo I just found another similar box and this one has the same thing only the threads aren't separated! It looks like mine is frayed Screenshot_20230101-204922.png

Looks like shattered silk. Pretty common occurrence in such pieces.

@Grandmasattic, what's in yours looks more like needlepoint thread (I could be wrong), whereas, your screenshot of another little container looks more like a piece of maybe silk or satin in it (to ME at least!)....magnified 3X......

I thought it was a partial skein of silk embroidery thread until OP said it was silk fabric, and I can see that it has shredded.
