Featured Your Favorite Antiques and Collectibles of 2022

Here are a few treasures to warm up these cold nights while reflecting back on the year in collecting:

First up is a Christmas present for Ms. G. It's a jewelry box made of coromandel wood with brass and bone and/or ivory accents: It was made ca. 1850 and sold in Paris's Palais Royal for travelers on the Grand Tour. It's smaller than it looks, but still manages to hold the whole collection

Next is a marble-top parlor table by Thomas Brooks from New York ca. 1870. I've been looking for this particular one for years!

A friend helped us find this two-armed bronze and brass Harvard Student Lamp ca. 1880s. Christmas colors!

Finally, we found this ca. 1890s jeweled ball shade oil lamp upheld by a putto for a (relatively) great price. Hey, when will we ever see another one?

My late 18th C pendant.

 

For me not the Discovery of an object, but it's exclusive background.

A (of 2) Dallah (arabic coffee pot) i owned already because i always liked them...
But '22 i by accident discovered that it's marked by the original and most wanted 18th ct. maker/inventor, and is worth .... A LOT! Up in 4 figures.

Here's mine: 2022 was kind of a year of finding inexpensive Navajo weavings for me:

This one I like the best: It's a Two Grey Hills style, with natural colored wool only and was crazy inexpensive at the urban hipster store, which is just the way I like it!



And of course some pottery: I found this shiny San Ildefonso pot by Lupita Martinez on the last day of my long bike tour last summer, so it was kind of a reward for having completed the journey:



And lastly, Jeff Roller's signature on this carved Santa Clara Pueblo avanyu jar was just faint enough to be missed by the seller-- also, just the way I like it.

 

At the moment, I CAN'T pick one or two.....I love it ALL....and THAT'S bad..... how to downsize!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But remember, mine are not new purchases....as I've been MOSTLY committed to NOT buying anything!!!! OTOH, I DO love to drool and YOU all have chosen WELL!!! ​

 

Wow, some really great finds! Almost feel like looking again myself, but the word is "de-accessioning" these days,

 

My siblings and I were dividing up my mom's estate (she died in june). After two days my bother said is there any one of a kind thing you would really like. i picked the "leprechaun" jug. (as I like to think of him ) my three sibling thought I was crazy because mom had really nice stuff and I picked THAT!. She and I were very much alike and I knew this was an exciting find for her. He is really more green than in the pics and he has one chip on the bottom under his elbow. if any one has any idea I would love wish to know more about him.

 

These are two things I’m having trouble parting with that came in this last year. Silver chests owned by a former Gorham employee from around the turn of the century. They have glass tops, each drawer designated for specific patterns, and are around 20” tall each. The carved lady is around 26”, no clue on the carver. Both purchased with the intent to sell and I can’t seem to list them.

 

Those Gorham chests are awesome! Did they arrive with pieces of each pattern inside?

 

Thanks I really love them! They aren’t super practical for my space but that doesn’t usually stop me. They unfortunately didn’t come with the silver examples. The lining is also absent from the drawers. They are still fantastic though and I only paid a couple hundred plus buyers premium. Not nothing for sure but a relative bargain in my eyes. They did come with some silver industry ephemera which was cool! There were some other bits in a drawer but I do not recall anything too interesting.

Edit: the ephemera alone should pay for the cases once I sell it.

 

One of my favorite photo finds of 2022! A cabinet card photo of a woman and two girls. The woman and one girl are holding exercise equipment (called Indian clubs), and the other girl holding a doll.

 

I bumped into one more favorite from the past year yesterday. This might be in my top five favorite items. Teeth, tongue, and collar are gold. I assume the eyes are ruby’s but I never checked too close. I’m not actually sure what the stone is. I’m guessing jade. I’m pretty sure it’s signed inside the top edge of the mouth but it’s so hard to get a loupe in a spot that can really make sense of it. Anywho, love this fella.

That‘s a tough one…I had many nice finds in 2022. My favorite piece probably is this regency era writing slope from the 1830s or 1840s. I have a heart for damaged antiques and so for this piece. The writing surface had sadly been removed and the small remaining piece functions now as a document holder. It has two beautiful hidden compartments behind a solid over 1cm thick Bird‘s-Eye Maple board. The sawn Bird‘s-Eye Maple Veneer on the interior is super rare on a slope of this age. It was used mostly in cheaper knive-cut pieces on later boxes.
The outer veneer is very nice flame-like Cocobolo. Looks best in sunlight, is much darker indoors.
There are 5 drilled holes on the bottom. This indicates that this piece was used on a boat and was therefore screwed on a table. So it didn’t fall off it on rough sea. Some captains boxes even had an clamp-mechanism for that purpose.
I was the only person bidding on it. Got it for 48 GBP.
