Unusual Chair

Hi all,

Can someone please help me identify and age this chair that we inherited? Everyone in my family hates it but I don’t want to sell it unless it will raise enough to buy us a new car!

The car is safe in the showroom.... I think 30s-40s with art deco styling. As plain as the legs are, I wonder if this is supposed to have a skirt.

 

Would this style have been called a "tub chair" or something similar, Brad?

 

Hahaha. No car for us then! That’s really interesting, thank you. I never considered the legs that plain but it’s a good theory. They splay outwards quite a lot, frequently stubbing toes and are one of the main reasons it’s called “that @@@@ing chair” by the rest of the family! Here’s a picture from the bottom if that sheds any light on the skirt issue.

 

Could be considered a tub chair.

 

I think we used to call them "barrel" chairs..........

 

I’d call it a descendent of the late Victorian/Deco-era channel back chair. I’d also give it a later, mid-century date. Sorry, no car!
