How old do you think this is? There are two labels, one almost looks Chinese or Japanese, the other I'm not sure.

    Thanks!

The first telescoping umbrella was introduced about 1970, so it's no older than that.

    Thanks for taking a look.

I've sold other ones that seemed to be telescoping (maybe I have that term wrong --bear with me) with carved lucite, seemed 1940's or 50's based on the lucite --these were the kind where you push the hardware up and it locks in as the umbrella opens, or are those not considered "telescoping"?

I'm no expert in this, so appreciate any info. Thanks!

Not to be confrontational, but the "pocket" umbrella has been around since the early 1930's. It only became "automatic" or spring-loaded in the late 60's.

Totes claims to have introduced the folding umbrella in 1970.

Finally found the time to find it!

"In 1928, Hans Haupt's pocket umbrellas appeared. In Vienna in 1928, Slawa Horowitz, a student studying sculpture at the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste Wien (Academy of Fine Arts), developed a prototype for an improved compact foldable umbrella for which she received a patent on 19 September 1929. The umbrella was called "Flirt" and manufactured by the Austrian company "Bruder Wuster" and their German associates "Kortenbrach und Rauh".[27] In 1969, Bradford E Phillips, the owner of Totes Incorporated of Loveland, Ohio obtained a patent for his "working folding umbrella".

If you've ever walked in a driving rain under an umbrella and felt that fine mist coming through the fabric, then you know what it feels like to be silk-screened.
