I don't see anything to suggest ivory. The designs were cut with a saw by hand, the only place it was filed was the outside edge.

Faint suggestion of ivory here, but my overall impression is that they are not.

Thanks for tagging me, inh. This is one of those threads that confuse me far too much, with all that piling up of photos of very different pieces. Not ADD and brain damage friendly, so I just retreat.:(
Anyway, the Chinese ones are bone and have been correctly identified as Fu symbols. Probably 1950s-60s.
Modern mass produced costume, inspired by Indian (Asia) jewellery.
Yes, Toledo damascene work. Real gold designs hammered into blackened steel, hence the magnetism. Ca 1970s-80s, I think. Toledo is a beautiful historic town south of Madrid.
Toledo damascene work originally decorated swords and sabres. It is now used for anything smallish and decorative, like jewellery and small objects for home decoration.

It's fine. What we hate is being asked to make decisions about something with inadequate photographic information. :)

    Just a wee explanation.
Michelle was apologizing to me, and thank you Michelle.

ADD people like cluttered and myself get confused by many different style items following each other at great speed in a thread. Our brains are wired differently from 'regular' brains, and in my case it is worsened by brain damage.
Cluttered often solves the 'speedy style diversion' thing brilliantly by numbering items, an arduous task.
I usually just don't look anymore, to prevent myself from getting disoriented for the rest of the day, dizzy, with blood pressure drop, headache, etc. If I get tagged I do look of course, but then I concentrate mostly on the items I get tagged for.

I am not writing this to blame anyone, I understand people get fired up and want answers for so many items. Besides, ADD-consciousness is not required when posting a thread.:playful: It is just an explanation.
So please keep tagging me, I love to help if I can.

I could follow it, but I'm weird. Other boards trained me to limit a thread to one or two items if they're related. It's easier for everyone to follow except people like me who love rabbit holes.

The earrings look to be Japanese or Chinese ivory? Any readers out there?

The earrings are Chinese bone Fu symbols, for good luck and fortune.:)

No cross hatching, eh? "Cross hatching" is a common term given to the wee lines seen to criss-cross in lines. Parallel lines denote walrus ivory. Even narwhale ivory (if it can even be found today) has cross-hatching, but it's cylindrical. I think. If I remember correctly. Maybe. ;)

Can't remember saying anything about cross-hatching.
But I do know how to recognize it when I see it, thank you.:) From my own collection, the side of an antique manju netsuke which I bought in the late 70s:

Think I have the photo saved to my 'Materials' file, so could become ubiquitous. :)
