    Size is roughly 61" x 65".
Any thoughts on age and/or pattern name?
The fancy stitching...is that just referred to as embroidery, or is there a different term?, and is it hand stitched? The quilting is hand stitched, but I'm having a hard time determining if the piecing is hand stitched or not. I can't really look into the seems well enough, because of the fancy stitching on top.
Also, is it common to have that fancy stitching on a quilt of this pattern? I ask only because I usually see this type of stitching on crazy quilts......but I have so much to learn. Thanks for your time & thoughts.
And if 6rivets happens to pop by, I'll try a tag...

"String" crib quilt, original design, 1900-WWI fabrics, "chicken scratch" embroidered embellishment. Doesn't make much difference whether it was hand or machine pieced. The condition is rough. If you can determine whether the embroidery floss is cotton or silk, the quilt's completion date could be better ascertained. (If it's cotton, the quilt-as-quilt can't date any earlier than the mid-1920s.)

Amazing.....you are, 6rivets. You never fail to make me say "how does she do that?"
Thanks so much for your help. I'll do a burn test in a little while, on the embroidery floss.:cat:

Yes she is amazing, a genuine asset to these or any boards that ever touch upon fabrics, the sewings arts and such, not to mention her always on the mark contributions on so many topics. Her contributions on ethnic origins and circa on obscure cultural styles never ceases to amaze me.

Yeah, I'm an expert in "obscure cultural styles" all right :wacky: Thanks for the kind words. Now if I can only figure out what the origin was of that handwoven something I eventually sold...

Seriously, though, this quilt was pretty much a no-brainer.

Oh, and just a thought: From the meticulous piecing (usually string quilts are pretty zany), anachronistic (c.1880s) embroidery and the fact that this is a crib quilt, I am going to be that Grandma made it.

Yes, yes, yes, she is quite an asset!, and so nice of her to share her knowledge with others. There are SO many folks here that are indeed so kind to share their knowledge....you included Don.:), and I appreciate all of you.
6Rivets, I did the burn test a couple of times. The first ones were sort of inconclusive, so I tried again this morning with a fresh sniffer. I think the embroidery is silk. It burns for a few seconds and then self extinguishes. The smell is like burning hair (the first few tests I couldn't figure out if I smelled hair or paper....but I think it smells more like hair). Thanks again for all the help.

Okay, let's assume it's silk. We're talking WWI or thereabouts, certainly pre-1927.

You know, if you got this at an estate sale you could do a genealogical search and really bump up its value. Quilt collectors go kinda crazy over provenance. It's an emotional thing.

No, I got it at a yard sale, and don't know anything about its history:( thanks for mentioning provenance .....that's a great reminder for me next time I come across another.
Your help is very appreciated, thanks again.
