Thank you all for the Likes on Kristin's table.

She will be making a soup out of the meaty rib bones, and I've got a pot going for pea soup out of the ham bone.

I forgot to buy the split peas and had to go out this morning to get them. The only choice left was the green ones...........we always use/d the yellow, but there is absolutely no difference in the taste between the two.....just the color. I can't wait to have a bowl.:cat:

Growing up in NC, my mom would make split pea soup with a ham bone in it while cooking & then tear/cut ham off bone & mix into soup - DELICIOUS!
But I've always had it with green peas - I didn't even know there were yellow ones (THAT - and homemade chili - are THE foods for cold winter days (and to heat up late at night)!

I'm of French Canadian decent and we use whole yellow Peas (vatana White) with a ham bone. Where I live in NH it's very difficult to find whole yellow peas, so I ask my local Indian grocery store to pick up some Vatana white peas when they go to Boston for supplies.
I remember stuffing my pockets with whole yellow peas to use with my pea shutter as a young boy in the 50's, The Nun's would search our pockets before entering the school yard, but we would hide them on our way to School, only to reclaim them after school, and then the pea shutter battles would begin, fortunately we didn't shoot our eyes out.

And if you have a large dog, they would enjoy getting the very last bits and pieces of the ham off the bone. Make sure it's a safe bone...........guess some are not.........

Yellow must be the color of choice 10 miles north of Boston, cause the only ones left were green.

I think people who do not like peas equate pea soup as being made of them............maybe it's the green color.
They make a face and shake their head at the mention of pea soup. LOL. The peas are hard and take some time to soften and gel into a soup. The thicker the soup the better............(just add a bit more water if too thick to your liking).

LOL..........that brings back memories of being hit with hard peas going to school. The boys delighted in being able to shoot from their pea shooters at us.I had completely forgotten about that. It seems it was the doings of grade school boys?

    I don't think I've ever seen a package that didn't say "split".

I have never heard of Vatana......must remember to look for them to see what they look like. I'm thinking about the size of Navy beans?

We loved pea soup as a family growing up. Home made bran muffins on the side...............

I'm the only one now, except for one granddaughter. I freeze it for her to pick up on her next visit.

Pea soup is made by me twice a year.........Christmas and Easter.

We had a ham for Christmas dinner, so I have a ham bone but won't be making soup with it. I don't like pea soup. My Mom made it and she and Dad loved it, but really it's the texture that turns me off it.

I was never a fan of pea soup.Once I had Veg All I never wanted to smell most vegetables again. LOL

However I loved Vegetarian Veg soup in the can.

The thing that makes a great pea soup is that salt pork & ham hock, however def not vegetarian.

I don't add salt pork......just use the shank bone, nor have I ever made it without the bone.....I seem to associate salt pork with home made beans which I do make occasionally.

The only vegetable that I prefer canned are the tiny sweet peas.....but canned beets are good too.

Thank goodness we have enough choices to satisfy our own tastes.

I think I would've noticed that bag at one time or another when buying beans. I will definitely look next time at the super market just out of curiosity.

Do you know if that is the same pea that gets split and sold as "split peas"?

    Thanks for posting.................

Kitties like fresh meat for Christmas too, they'll even attempt to gnaw on fatty bones, but they don't have the crunching power of pooches.
