This comes up all the time in the cameo world and I'll say what I always say: carnelian/cornelian, sard & sardonyx refer to colors, not to different minerals; agate & jasper are words that relate to translucency & arrangement of colors, not to different minerals. The word onyx comes from the Greek for fingernail; it designates the white layer in sardonyx. They are all fundamentally chalcedony and chalcedony is a variety of quartz.

This is quartz as microcrystalline chalcedony that formed as banded agate in the colors of sardonyx:

Neither- looks like the metal of the pin has been pushed down and is embedded into the brooch. Does that tell you anything?. I think I read somewhere that black Bakelite is difficult to test but I’ll give it a go. No glue.

Jivvy the research is my favorite

If inspired to do so, people in Alabama could get to my house in under an hour, so: ALABAMA ROCKS. :cat:

They'd be throwing rocks at that horny swan, for sure. I'd be making it into compost if it tried getting loosy goosey with me. Swans eat mostly fish and taste lousy, so eating one is a desperation move.

But as this is the Finds thread, here's something I forgot I had. It looked weird when I bought it, and when it popped back out ... no wonder. They had the chain threaded through the wrong end. It was hanging upside down. Grabbed some pliers and fixed it last night and dumped it into my eilat hoard. DSCF1617.JPG

Is your sauce ladle by Chase? This one is.... Chrome plated rather than silver.

Yup, scent bottle missing its stopper. Cased aventurine with controlled bubbles, may well be made on Murano and very nice too. Find a clear tall stopper and you're laughing. Weight is indeed Chinese.

I love the candle holder. Very elegant. In our house we would need the fire brigade rapidly as the kids wouldn't leave it upright for long!

Last of the big spenders, me. Cardigan clips a whole forty cents and a Stratton pendant, under five dollars. The fully hallmarked John Pinches silver bracelet was about five. ;) A87B.jpg A85D.jpg A85A.jpg A87A.jpg A85C.jpg A86A.jpg A86B.jpg

Nice! I got some bits and bobs today, and if I can gin up the energy I'll take a photo of a few of them. Spent US$18 total, not counting the gasoline. Everything was spread from h*** to breakfast.
