@Bronwen - who's the image supposed to be? I've never seen an opal made into a cameo before. The lady is probably epoxied on. I can't picture opal matrix being amenable to carving.

Welcome, NinaNini. You have inherited some really beautiful things and have already been given good guidance on them. As Holly, says, this cameo is carved from a single large piece of opal, not two pieces glued together. I think the cameo and its mount are contemporary with each other, so not super old, although not brand new either. There's a deco influence to the cameo. I don't think the figure is meant to be identifiable in the way that figures on cameos in the neoclassical style are. Davey's Water Bearer suggestion has a lot going for it. You're not an Aquarius, by any chance? Gorgeous piece.

The best known name in opal carving is Wilhelm Schmidt. This does not look like his work (which he did not sign) but he inspired others. Schmidt really pushed the boundaries of gem engraving:

It is beautiful, Nina. The style looks 1970s to me. It is also a pendant, with two loops.

Your cameo is far nicer, but this is from the same period. Both definitely have a mid- to late 1970s look:
