Hello and thank you for taking the time to review my post. I think this box is Swiss, I was wondering if someone could confirm that. Also any thought on the mark carved into the lid bottom also the first word on the paper label? The box is 7 inches wide.

Looks Italian. Can't quite make out the first word on the label, but "Rilievo" in Italian means "relief". (As in "raised" for the carving I would think.)

    Treenware (wooden ware)

    Possibly Germany Black Forest

I wondered if he was yodeling, but the rilievo {that I can read) suggests something else :)

Rilievo (whatever it means in this case) is italian, you're right :)

Perhaps means "high relief". Could be flat wrong on this, lol.

The carving reminds me of the Italian wooden wares like Anri, etc although I don't know if they did boxes, too.

It is a minor point, but the container itself appears to be lathe-turned, and the relief carving made as a separate piece and then attached to the top.

Given that Italian is one of the Swiss languages, it could be from there.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

It's confusing!!! To me, the child looks Asian, the mountains and chalet look Swiss, and you say the writing looks Italian!! Plus, I don't know what the mark on the bottom indicates!!!???:rolleyes:

always nice to learn something about Switzerland...

the mountains, the chalet and the rest look generic. furthermore the language could eventually be Ladin.
if this was by a Swiss carver - let's say Brienz - he and his whole family would be neutered asap.

Actually South Tirol (province in northern Italy) also has this type of houses. You can see them throughout the whole Alp area.
Also his hat looks very much traditional for Südtirol:

Bavarian and Austrian hats have different shape and mostly are decorated with feathers. Swiss traditional hats are usually flat.

    Yes, exactly!
Btw. I forgot to mention, that this piece was most definitely made after WWI, since before that time people didn't speak Italian in South Tirol.

Thanks for all the input, tried to get a better image of the mark on lid bottom, reflection of finish made it difficult, best effort below, maybe A R? Regards Joe.
