Carved painted wood chinese scholars - part of a larger piece?

    The top of this carving has a piece sticking up that looks like it would "dovetail" into something else. The robes look like they were gilded and there is what I believe is crushed mother of pearl on one side and at the top bottom of the carved side.
    Does anyone know what I have here?

    No clue except that would be a 'mortise and tenon' type fitting.
