Checking Worldcat shows only 3 copies of that particular edition/publisher in WC-listed libraries, all 3 in the Netherlands, so it is as rare as hen's teeth. Sry, have no clue on value .

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I found more copies in a variety of libraries. Most are not in the United States. The only one in the U.S. that I verified for sure is at the Newberry Library in Chicago.

There are several records in Worldcat for this edition, but none of them have many holding libraries. For example, there is a record showing only the Bibliotheque National de France.

Not sure whether we really have expertise in this particular subject area in this forum. With all of the recent registrants we might. So perhaps you will get an expert reply here.

And you probably know the one you have is a later edition of a book originally published in the 1630s? Yours is from 1726.

I don't think we are recommending other sites very much here. You could try this forum: http://www.bookthink.com/php3.10/index.php

You may need to wait a little while for a reply.

And of course, there is always the Evil Empire (a.k.a. the old place), in the Booksellers group.

Possibly the most interesting thing about it is that it is a British book, a fairly early product of the Oxford University Press as the Clarendon Press, Edited by Joseph Brown, a fellow of Kings College Oxford.

It is a fairly late example of the latinisation of everything, appropriate for a volume in Latin but it used to be that the common language of universities was Latin and books on all topics would circulate in Latin.

The half calf binding with marbled boards looks to me to be considerably later than 1730, Possibly 19th C.

The main curiosity is that Masseo Barberini was the Pope (as Urban VIII) who persecuted Galileo and was famous for his nepotism and corruption, the Sepp Blatter of his day.

It may be rare but so would be buyers, the binding is not remarkably fine and the subject matter is not all that interesting. I'd not put any great price on it.

It's very much all about condition and this is far from fine with much damage and foxing. If it is important and indeed 1 of only a few known and/or someone really wants it then some of those issues become less critical.

I love the Newberry Library. Many years ago I worked there for a couple of years. When I lived in Chicago and worked elsewhere, I used to go there for genealogical research.
