Featured Covered cheese dish: anything unique?

    Poppies. I'd think 1880s or so, they were a hugely popular motif. If you look at the sides, it's very Art Nouveau, too. I also think English - and yes, the outlines and some infill are transfer, the rest overpainted polychrome. You won't see dots if the original printing plate was hand done and smooth.

    Numbers are a pattern/shape number. That impressed mark rings a bell, I'll hunt through Godden.

    I'm not sure why I think it's Irish either! I was guessing. but under a loupe it has a better appearance of a shamrock than in the pics.

    I wonder if it's actually Japanese in origin--some Nippon ware has a clover-like stamp, for example.

    I honestly doubt it, it has all the attibutes of English, including that red numbering.

    The Japanese don't put pattern/shape numbers hand painted on their wares.

    Hm. I'm wondering if it's a badly done Shaw and Copestake mark.
