pitchers front.jpg pitchers back.jpg pitcher front.jpg pitcher bottoms.jpg My 80 yr old grandmother was moving and I rescued these 2 pitchers from her cupboard that she didn't want anymore. She's now 90.
She originally lived in London, England and moved to Canada at 18 yrs old. I don't have a lot of experience with antiques, but I would love some guidance.

The taller pitcher stands 8" tall and is about 5" across, the smaller pitcher stands 7" tall and is about 4" across.

The bird looks to me to be a "Taiwan Magpie" ?

1920s or thereabouts. Air brush and transfer with a bit of hand painted embellishment. Probably had a third. I suspect she had them new - and yes, English.

Would I refer to these as "pitchers" or "carafes"? Do you think it's worth me auctioning?

Not carafes, those are glass. We'd call them a jug, but I'm in the UK. Over here, not much money, but they're pretty.

Some additional information since she would've been born in 1928 and was in London England as a young woman when all the teens, kids and young people were moved to safety camps outside of the bombing zone. She then moved to Canada, and her mother, also English came afterwards. If these are from the 20's then I would assume these are my great-grandmother's and if they brought them over with them, they must have been very well protected on the trip.

You don't state the size, but I am assuming the smaller jug is for cream, the other for milk.

    Welcome!

Unless great-grandmother abandoned/sold off all her household goods before emigrating, guessing she had some things shipped over. She was still no doubt selective about what she took, but don't think the pitchers came over swaddled in clothing inside a suitcase, well packed in a crate.

    Gorgeous set, and welcome, Rachel.
A Taiwan magpie is blue with a black head. It is probably just a fantasy bird.
Looks a bit like a quetzal:

I think it might be meant to be a peacock - common motif, and there's eyes on that tail. I don't think these were made to be used, but rather as a decorative set of three. That's pretty typical of the times.

My first impression with the airbrushing and shapes was Czech. Are you sure about the English Origin?

I've seen an awful lot of English between the wars stuff with airbrushing. Likewise that shape and the clay looks right. Plus, the piece workers mark - that X? Shape is a copy of Victorian silver.

That is what made me think English as well. I am by no means an expert, but have seen so many over the years. Not with these gorgeous colours though.

I'm thinking the bird could be a "fantasy" bird of Paradise.

I have a bedroom set and while it doesn't look like these, the height of the pitchers makes me wonder if they were part of a set. There would be a ewer and bowl, plus a smaller pitcher, sometimes a toothbrush cup and soap dish. Here is an example from Etsy. The fact that the two pitchers look alike but are different heights is what makes me think they were part of a set. il_1588xN.1523459577_2kh6.jpg
