The frame is wood with added composition decorations. 42" x 36" and it is extremely heavy. I don't think the mirror it original but it does have some age and a little deterioration of the silver.

Any idea how old this is? My picture of the back isn't very good but I couldn't remove it from the wall. Would you call this Rococo style?

Shipping? Has anyone ever shipped one of these? How do you pack it so the decorations don't get damaged? Thank you.

    Hi Mill Cove,
Great mirror. Looks like 40s/50s to me with that type of frame. Mirror looks original with that bit I can see of the back. The weight and shipping of that piece is going to be a horror. If it were me and I had to ship it, it would go without the mirror. The least little bump will cause pieces to fly off. You could try to buy a mirror box from a moving company but you will still have to repack it for shipping. The moving company will not have the bouncing of 30 handlers at sorting offices both human and machinical. If it was a sentimental thing you wanted to send to a friend I MIGHT consider it. I would cover the edges with plastic film and spray foam insulation over the sides and then pack it in the mirror/picture box from the moving company.

I was going to suggest a pro place that has a foam machine to bag and foam it into a box.

Gregg, can you explain why you think it's 40s or 50s? I'm still a novice at this and I'm finding it hard to tell the difference between the early 1900s pieces and later pieces. Thank you.

Thanks for the packing tips everyone. I'm thinking I should try local first and shipping only as a last resort. I wouldn't be able to pack this by myself so it would have to go to a professional service.

Get a quote and add it to it. With insurance, delivery notice, all that.

King, I couldn't agree more. A few years back, I bought an antique over-mantel mirror from someone who posted a set S+H price that I thought was too low. In the end, the S+H ended up costing almost twice the price of the mirror itself AND the original "estimated" shipping. (The seller was devastated, but I voluntarily paid the difference, since I knew from the start that his estimate was way off..)

    Hi Mill Cove,
If you look at the back, the wood is really smooth most older wood would have not a rough surface just not as smooth. The sharp edge on the back of the frame would be not as sharp. Of course looking at a photo is not the same as "touchy feeley". The bow on top just looks newer. If you can see the back of the bow and the backing is more rounded instead of cut straight it would be the next place I would look.
