He liked oak furniture because he thought oak has an "air of permanence" I thought that was a lovely description and so true.

 

Absolutely. And it sounds much nicer than 'sturdy'.

 

"Sturdy" is what they call children when they are slightly, but noticeably, overweight. After that, comes "chubby."

 

That's a good expression for how I feel about the interiors of houses. The woodwork and doors on older usually look more permanent and sturdy to me than what's done in newer houses.

 

Ah, the Culture of Permanence. I subscribe to it and wish I was living back when it ruled the land.
