In the late 50s my aunt closed her 'beauty shop' and installed one of those free-standing THINGS in her kitchen. I swear I can still smell my first perm she gave me - singed hair & all - bleck! And yes I was scared to move too. :yuck:

I can still smell the perm I got in the 1970's. Man that stuff was brutal. I had what they called a drop perm. Flat on top and then the curls began a few inches down. Terrible look for me.

On purpose in the late 70s got an 'afro' (all the rage then) - gawd it looked awful on me. After I finally got it grown out I went in for my LAST perm - asked for a soft 'body' one. . .exited with my 2nd 'afro'. . .never again. . .

My older brother always wanted to have straight hair. So when the perm frenzy hit, I was stunned that he had it done..or maybe he did it himself which was not a good idea since he refuses to read any kind of directions or instructions.

Let's face it, some of the hairstyles from that era were terrible. Most were hideous. I look back and laugh. My worst cut was a short haircut... looked beyond bad.It was downright ugly. But I loved my feathered haircut... I so wanted to look like Farah. That did not happen.

    Love your restoration!
I had naturally curly hair and would run screaming when Mother came at me with the brush.
She decided a perm would fix the problem :( Wrong, double frizzy and double the screams!
