Featured Nestles' "Assorted Foil-Wrapped Chocolates" Tin Casket (Ca. 1920)

This was a purchase from my local flea-market last week...



By my reckoning, and according to others I've shown the box to, it's probably late teens, early 20s. It doesn't seem to be fully Art-Deco, and more Art-Noveau in decoration.

I lined the interior with cardboard, and filled it with chocolates

 

Bottom and interior photos are needed, please. That Paisley decoration went on for decades. Foil wrapped chocs are a bit later.

Seriously though, the inside is just plain plated tin. The base has "NESTLE'S" in big angular blocky capitals and an old label on it.

 

I need to see the logo and old label please. I used to collect old tins, so I'm not bad on dating them. The base construction and inside is a clue too.

 

I agree, those change over time and are a way of dating the tins.

 

Uneeda was Nabisco not Nestles.

Sorry for the slow reply. I had to destroy the evidence of my own chocoholism. You understand.

Anyway - the bottom and inside. Everyone I've shown this box to says the 1920s or 30s. Whether or not they're correct, I don't know. But I'm sticking to that date until proven otherwise. There's no definitive information that I've been able to find online.

Oh, I'd be carefully here. That label doesn't appear to date to the 1920s-1930s time frame.

The best way to date your item is by the logo. The Nestlé Corporation adopted that logo in 1988 but it was used on their chocolate products before that date. The earliest usage I can find is on a 1940s vintage ad. This is supposed to be a 1930s chocolate poster and you'll notice it has an earlier logo. As the Nestlé logo on your item appears to be influenced by Streamline Moderne, I'd think it (the logo) dates to the mid-1930s but, of course, I could be wrong. As to your item, with that sticker (with its font, colorway and stamp,) I'd think post-World War II. The design, of course, is retro but if I had to guess, I'd say your tin dates to the 1960s. Others may disagree.
