Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Yes, it could be! I do see something there, though. :)

I am deep (DEEP) down the McAllister-research rabbit hole.

Nothing that shows W. Howard's work.

The family was famous, very famous, for their optometry work. Of that I've got pictures.

    @Jivvy

I tried looking for him with Meltzer, thinking I might find a decent image of Penn's Woods, but couldn't quite see if captions matched up with images (on my phone)

I can't make out that date! Good for those who can...

OMG, just discovered that the fakakta sesquicentennial site has more pictures than previously realized.

Prepare to learn nothing from this discovery, but here's Penn's Woods:

And yes, in case you're wondering, this man (who may have NOTHING to do with the OP's piece) also did some work in theatrical set design.

That's what I thought, but the captions on those pages were...

FSR, chrome on this phone won't let me copy an image location and I didn't want to bust a gut downloadi... Never mind! Lol

Maybe this guy can be of some help

I wasn't sure if that was actually Penn’s Woods or a set design - couldn't verify...

I didn't even have captions. And the image only showed up when the slideshow was on autorun, not if you clicked through.

Just happened to catch it playing when I was closing some background windows. :hilarious:

It says "Penn's Woods" in the image -- banner at the top of the center section.

EDIT: technically, all I can read is "Penn's Wo", but I'm willing to go with that. ;)

Interesting info and research! I hope it does have something to do with the OP's piece but even if it doesn't, I like it. :)

    Hey, THANX for that tip!
I actually sold a Constance Cochrane painting to him years ago, my record highest sale - and that painting came from the same consignor as this one!
I just eMailed Jim, and am hoping to receive a positive, or at least useful response from him. I'll let you all know...

    Oh, nice @LoveTheHunt!

We were researching Coastal Watercolor for @Shwikman and I found a gallery in California that specializes in California Impressionist painting. (I can't dig it up at the moment)

They were actively looking for obscure artists. I'm sure they have great context to put add those pieces too. Much greater than mine, anyway! :)

So I hoped Jim would be of some help. Let us know what he says, and good luck!

I couldn’t find any good enough photos of paintings by this guy but might be another avenue. William Hugh Montgomery, active Massachusetts and New Hampshire but also traveled quite a bit.

I'm seeing some information that the W.H. Montgomery who wrote the book was from New Zealand. The book was published there... still looking for info.

Here is something, giving as sources some books about New Zealand artists.

One of the sources has this online text version. He did indeed travel quite a bit:

Well, sadly, I did not receive any reply from Jim. I suppose he's a busy man...
