I'm with you! If I need a nice dress for a function I go to my friend's vintage clothing shop and head straight to the 1950s section

 

I was just about the same when I first got to my adult size, & my mother would insist that I wear a 'panty girdle' (as opposed to the 'panel girdles' she wore) with certain clothes so I wouldn't stretch out the seat of a narrow skirt. Can't see how this would actually have worked. Used to have so much stuff around the waist some days: panties; pantyhose; girdle; half slip or 'pettipants' (remember those?); waistband of skirt. There'd be a big red crease at the end of the day.

 

This was of course pre-pantyhose & I think I only wore it a couple of times before I protested.

As far as pettipants, I wore them Monday through Friday for 4 years when I was in highschool. I went to an all girls parochial highschool & our uniform was a white long sleeve blouse, a kelly green jumper & kelly green kneesocks. We all learned about the pettipants shortly after the school year started your freshman year. If you did not have a relative that had attended the school before you, your new friends soon clued you in to how much more comfortable they were than a slip.

 

I was so proud of my little girdle - I wasn't allowed to wear nylons until I was in high school... but they went out of style the same year (1966)!

 

These days no one wears the nylons either. The girdles have a certain "following" one might say, as do all vintage undies. There's a nice market for them if they're in good shape.

 

Yuck, girdles, long line bras, pettipants. I miss stockings though. I think they were a very feminine addition to an outfit. Pantyhose were wonderful. I really hated petticoats though. My mother (who hated ruffles and frou-frou on herself!) thought we girls should wear them whenever we were dressed up, which was pretty much anytime we weren't outside playing in the yard. Those things scratched the backs of your legs! It was nearly impossible to sit with them on! This from one who lives in jeans, sweatshirts or loose shirts and sandals with socks! I am an embarrassment to my children.

Whoa, that's a find! You must have just about fainted!! Not just D&E, but a really desirable set. Well done.

I say: I'm an embarrassment to my 96 year old mother for much of the same reasons!

 

Without pantyhose, miniskirts would not have been possible. Without miniskirts, maxi coats would not have been necessary.

Don't remember mine being particularly scratchy, think I rather liked them. You had to get the skirt of that organdy dress to stand out somehow. But I was such a string bean, remember having one my mother had to rig up satin ribbon suspenders for because the size that was long enough was too large around the waist & kept slipping down in a most unladylike way.

 

No one has ever accused me of being a string bean. EVER!

 

Skinny has never been one of my problems.

 

Remember those petticoats with the white plastic inner tube?

Oh, hell, yeah! I loved all that stuff!

 

Scouts, I was just going to mention those! I never had one, but I remember that a girl in my 1st grade class had one. She used to make a big deal of "blowing it up" every now and then (tho it didn't really need it) just to show off.

 

I've never even heard of those!

 

Funny what we remember after all these years.

I didn't have one, either, but I don't feel the least bit deprived today - it just makes me smile... Wow! I've really grown up! Lol

 

I hadn't heard of them either. Suppose it's a little better than a hoop skirt. Maybe.

 

Who would have thought, me posting a dummy would provoke such nostalgia?
