I bought this yesterday at a local yard sale for only $10. I thought it had a folk art feel to it?
Can anyone make out the name or know anything about the artist (Taz?)? The look or the animals feels familiar for some reason
As always thank you for any help.
    PS - Happy Easter!

Don't know the artist, but it looks like it was done with an airbrush and pen.

    Perhaps short for Fozzie Bear.

A souvenir from somewhere. Given the selection of animals, I'd look to Africa.

I'm thinking more "street/beach fair" artist.

It may be my Florida upbringing, but airbrush artists on the beach were common in the late seventies / early eighties.

Mostly t-shirt people, but some working on canvas.

Maybe an African artist working on the beach? Agree with Debora that animals are all African. It's not every artist that would include baboons, porcupines & that many members of the deer family in a limited group of animals.

Or someone from central Florida who spent a lot of time at Busch Gardens.

Or maybe that was just my childhood. :hilarious:

From Wikipedia: "Busch Gardens continued to grow and, in 1965, opened the 29-acre (12 ha) Serengeti Plains, which allowed the African wildlife to roam freely."

The fish at the top of this piece look like they are headed toward the ark, but fish were not brought into Noah's ark. The relevant biblical text (Genesis 7:13–16, 21–23) states that God only brought to the ark representatives of all the created kinds of air-breathing, land-dwelling creatures.

At any rate, I agree that the types of animals represented in this piece are almost all African, so I am thinking that this is a modern African folk art piece. But of course, I could be wrong.

Agree with most that it’s definitely African and I’d guess Tingatinga which is that classic African folk art style used throughout the country.

Definite tourist painting and some of the artists are really wonderful IMO. I don’t collect African folk art but I’ve seen lots of work I like. I’m just more tribal w Africa over folk but I turned down a wonderful hair salon sign painting w various “dos” that I loved and should have bought.

    The animal paintings are charming.
