LOL, good question. It's a secret, like most things on this forum! :hilarious:

Where is the chair? I assume it's in the Netherlands at Jean-Marie's office being he's sitting on it at his home page. Who owns it?, good question. I appreciate everyone's comments. If any one runs across any more information in the course of their travels I'd sure like to know more. Thanks

Welcome to the forums - but seriously, how hard would it have been to just say something like, 'Saw this chair on a website (helpfully provide the link), interested in producing a replica, but can't get any info from the dealer, my own research only found one similar at Chartwell (a link or image of that piece would be helpful too), they said theirs is 16th/17th century. Hoping you nice folks might have some further information...'

Yeah hi there, you know I'm new to this forum and I'm not a mind reader. I'm just learning how all this works. Maybe you did not read the entire post I don't know. Your showing up late to the conversion. If you have some knowledge about this chair that you would to share with me I'm all ears, I don't really appreciate your terse welcome, others have already pointed out what I woulda shoulda coulda. Give me a break.

I did read the entire thread, an unnecessary chore to glean the information that could have been relayed in less than sixty words, and would have been helpful to those who could try and help you out. Regarding the 'terse' welcome, it was indeed short and to the point, (were you expecting something more flowery and eloquent?), it was sincere, and I feel no remorse about suggesting a more useful initial post - but to be clear, I don't really appreciate your general attitude here, and am feeling foolish for even supposing that a welcome was appropriate. Good luck in your search...

Thank you Cheryl, I will do my best to comply. I'm Sorry I did not lay it out more clearly from the outset. Again I'm just learning here.

I still do not see anything European. nearest would come from the era when the Netherlands were Spanish - or a copy thereof.

That is a big red flag in my view, I don't think i have ever come across a dealer that would not talk my ears off in providing information about a piece they had for sale or that was not for sale & keeping in their personal collection for now.

For a good overview on early Dutch furniture in the 16th-17th century, this book is quite good i hear, the problem? it's all in dutch!. Early english furniture was heavily influenced by Dutch design as well as construction during this period and these ideas were naturally imported into the american colonies as well. Indeed, as someone who has this book commented recently "We are finding all manner of parallels between the stuff in this book and things we have seen in New England furniture for years & years."
I would add there was a large Dutch immigrant presence in america in the 17th century in NYC as well as Virginia.

OK, I have tried off & on ALL MORNING to download this book to a PDF or similar file to get some pics, no go, not gonna happen, not only no but, HELL NO!
It's over 500 pages & the photographs are gorgeous & professionally done. Like many academic books they tend to be scarce, out of print & expensive. Best price i saw was $109. USD at Amazon.
I also noticed that some antique dealers in the Netherlands had ad's with some KILLER pieces of authentic 17th century Dutch furniture that cited the page # of this book for similar examples, always a good sign.
I would say this book, published in 2011 is probably the definitive word at this time on early Dutch furniture & a must have for anyone interested in the "golden age" of Dutch furniture.

Challenges @i need help to download this book! Make it Happen! We wanna see pics of early dutch chairs!
There are a blue million links to download to a PDF file but, every one them goes nowhere. Obviously the publisher has been very thorough in getting them removed, many from education sites.

Sorry James, I can rarely handle even small PDFs on iPhone. I will see if I can find one that seems operable, when I get a chance. It looks like a Great Book.

iPhone? no puter huh. OK, not a problem, you find the link that works & I'll download the file! Find being the key word there.
Many of the links i went to were .edu sites, colleges & universities however, they all said ERROR!404! GO AWAY! or some such. Guesses they were threatened with legal action by publisher.

LOL, Oh Dear! Yeah, i had a similar experience which i think is a mistake biz wise. My theory is they would sell more hardcover books if publisher allowed wider distribution because more people would be aware it existed. Plus, they could charge to download which Amazon requested i ask publisher, which i did for their Kindle thingy.
Still, GOOD TRY INH! Nothing beat a try but failure. GOLD STAR!

No problem Michael, if you are interested in early Dutch furniture, I'd get that book. For such a small country, the Netherlands had a massive influence worldwide in fine art, pottery & furniture during their golden age in the 16th-17th century, quite remarkable.

EUR with the same captains chair story only this one claims 17th-18th century. It sites OP chair in above mentioned book on page 368 but i can't read what it says as it's written in Dutch.

Wow this is fantastic! Has anyone seen the 2 Pics at Chartwell website? There is 1 wide-angle and 1 standard shot. The chair looks to be in much better condition with what appears to be some inlay, armrest spindles are carved not turned. Unfortunately no close ups ;-/

No, has no idea what Winston was up to in his painting room! :hilarious:
It would be helpful to translate what the Dutch text says.
I am still having a hard time with the 3 leg captains chair thingy at sea.
In Dutch paintings of the period (16th-17th century) you see plenty of 3 leg turned chairs but none of this type chair that i am aware of, this is a problem that must be resolved in dating OP chair.
