RE: research into family history -- I am not saying this applies to any of the family histories spoken of here but . . . are any of you familiar with the old (long time ago) wording "born on the wrong side of the blanket"?

I have heard of it and know what it means, but no idea of it's origin.

Don't mean to take this back to the original topic, but when I go to a restaurant, I check the marks on the china and other tablewares.

Just curious, moreotherstuff, but . . . do you keep a record of which makers are leading in the restaurant tableware arena?

If you are going to a new restaurant or a restaurant new to you perhaps outside your locale, do you try to guess ahead of time who the maker(s) of the china, glassware, silverware will be based on the restaurants' advertisements or reputation???? ;)

No records. Not particularly good restaurants. I just embarrass the people I'm with.

That is something not only antiquers do. I have been a graphic designer for over 30 years and when I go to the movies I try to ID the type face used in the credits :)

These days the restaurant ware is all "made in China" china. :-(

Good heavens the things that get lodged in a brain & quietly stay there until something wakes them up!

Your post brought back one of the few things I remember (although who knows what's lurking in a synapse somewhere) from the Dobie Gillis show. A professor character in one episode is mocked a little in advance of his visit to the house for his habit of checking the bottoms of things. One of the regulars predicts the Prof. will pick up & look at the bottom of a vase, which of course he does. And then of course they find out he is really someone to respect for his broad knowledge.

I think I saw a bit of one episode of Dobie when I was very young. I know of the show, but didn't really watch it from what I recall.

Who would have thought he would move on to become the hard working first mate of a small tour boat? One of my cats is named for that character.

I am surprised I remember the show, it started in 1959 and I was born on 1956. I assume I saw it because I was number 6 of 9 children in my family. I suspect me teenage sisters liked the show and that is why I saw it.

DH remembers the show, he is is 9 yearly older than me so that is no surprise :)
