All the better to eat you with! That guy looks creepy, to put it mildly.

He's meant to. Some versions of Pan are quite demonic, which may have been the inspiration for this guy.

Do you think whoever made it stood back and said 'never again will I do teeth'. He looks wonderfully creepy when you scroll down until you reach the mouth and then the comedy teeth rather spoil the effect.

Seems to be rare to see smiles with teeth in cameos:bucktooth:... Great subject of collecting for a dentist!:D

He strikes me as being someone's interpretation of what this guy would look like if seen from the front:

This is obviously Pan. Versions in which the goat skin got lost came to be identified as Attila the Hun.

For similar reasons, I think, the exaggerated, unnaturalness.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

And they have its provenance back to the 17th century. That must be part of the reason for the high estimate.

I just found that there is a website devoted to the collection of the Fourth Duke of Marlborough, one of the owners of this piece.

A friend brought the upcoming auction to my attention earlier in the week, suggesting I might want to go see it.

That is a huge part of the estimated value, since it is not unique in age.

I use the Beazley Archive site constantly. If you go back through this thread you will find many links to it.

It's legendary. I have the book Sir John Boardman & his colleagues made about it.

One of my favorite pieces is among those being sold:

Another favorite is this Aphrodite Callipygous, admiring her own buttocks:

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I thought it looked familiar! :)

I noticed they don't have much info about the cameo that Aquitaine posted from the upcoming auction and there is a statement saying that its current whereabouts are unknown. I thought about informing them of the auction with all of the provenance information. What do you think? Have you communicated with the owners of that site?
