Can't tell from the photo... are the hook tips horn (like deer) or something other than wood? I'd leave the "rubber" alone. Original is always best.

Back when I was going to the reconstructive surgeon's office regularly, I ran into my sister's friend's brother there. He had lost his thumb and all but his pinky in an industrial mishap of some sort. The doctor had put the guy's big toe in place of the thumb so he could grasp things. Had it working perfectly.
