I have had people come by my booth at shows saying things like "My mother had jewelry like this, when she passed away we threw it all in the trash."

The stress when cleaning out a relative's house after the die can be unreal, often family members just want it all gone! I know lots of dealers who find valuables at the transfer station. I found a nice little carved box, nothing special but nice, with some fabric pouches in it. The top 2 were empty but the 3rd had $70 worth of scrap gold in it

 

One our end, gotta love when THAT happens! I'm sitting on a stack of negatives from a friend of a friend's house. They all date to the 50s and 60s. I can't figure out why the family didn't want those, but they probably have the prints. If I hadn't grabbed them, transfer station would have been the size of it.

Like the majority of the stuff from this woman's estate it is it is brand spanking new & looks like the day she bought it.

This past Tuesday night they were selling the boxes of linen. I bought 6 table lots of the stuff. At least 95% of what I got still has the tags attached & much of it was still in the boxes or bags they were in when she bought the pieces.

I got 100+ Madeira made finger tip towels. There are appliqued, embroidered & some with both. There are hankies from Madeira, Switzerland, Austria, Hong Kong & enough Irish linen to choke a horse.

WWII might as well, judging from the date. The last date is 1939, the year the War started, and it may never have started up again.

Got out hunting today, and found a sale at a house where the people had just moved in. Sounds bad, right? I spent about $50, with @Any Jewelry 's voice in my ear. One of the sellers was Dutch by birth, some of whose grandparents had lived in Indonesia. Recognize those earrings? (LOL) I may have overpaid but how do you resist provincial Dutch silver? The cuff links were sold as Dutch too, but those garters on the top tell another story. The ivory and hand-cut silver (probably) bracelet came from another sale. The pin has a funky safety on the C clasp; a piece folds up to keep the pin in place. It has to have marks but I haven't found them yet. The spoon has funny marks and wasn't cheap. It looks like a Britannia mark on the back and C&Co for a manufacturer. The little box has wiggle work engraving and a birdie on top. No clue what that is. The cup either; it has a mark shaped like an English horn.

I seriously need to get some better pictures of the back of the spoon and that pin. It's Victorian, and may even be gold. The lady charged me a buck for it.

I think so. Sure looks like it. I don't know who it is either, but Dutch they ain't!

Here's the mark on the spoon. The one on the far left looks like a lion's head, but it's not a London mark I recognize.

The small tile with a sun is also Dutch, it says "tel alleen de zonnige uren", only count the sunny hours (of life). Perfect advice.

The cuff links with the belts are inlaid with Iona marble, so Scottish. The belts (not garters ) are called 'strap and buckle', they are worn with a central clan crest by the non-noble members of a Scottish clan to symbolize allegiance to the chief. Except in this case there is no clan crest in the centre, so just a nice Scottish souvenir, I think.

@Any Jewelry, the stone in the cuff links looks rather moss agate to me, but that too is consistent with Scottish origin

 

Iona marble is not all that well-known, but similar to Irish Connemara marble. It can be greyish and translucent as well as the better known bright green.

But the green in these examples is in patches, the cufflinks stone is more "hairy", in thin threads...

 

Hairy Iona marble is reserved for jewellery for hairy men.

I'm going to come in on the side of moss agate, not from the hirsuteness argument, on the grounds of color. The way coral & conch shell cameos can usually be told apart by the shade of pink, the yellow green of the marble looks different to me than the bluer green of the agate.
