    Hello,
I'm working on my mother's estate and am trying to learn about a few scatter rugs she bought several decades ago at an antique store. I recall that she said they were made by some type of charity organzation, mission, or orphanage. My memory fails me. Apparently they were well known at the time but I can't find out anything about them. I believe they were made in the early 20th century. The rugs feel like wool and are pale earthtones. They look the same on both sides. I'm attaching photos and hope someone can help me identify them. They measure approximately 30 x 56 inches. Thank you! Rug1a.jpg Rug2a.jpg Rug3a.jpg

    Hi Migg!

    Welcome to Antiquers.......

Very pretty rug. I really love the design and the colors.

What comes to my mind regarding mission, charity, etc. are the Grenfell rugs from Canada, worked at home by women of Labrador and Newfoundland.

However the Grenfell rugs/mats that I'm familiar with have always been scenic....beautiful too I might add.

Hopefully someone else here will be able to think/know of a charity or missionary that was popular at the same time that also made rugs.

I assume you looked for labels on the backside?

    Hi,
I had the same rug in my bedroom for years. Mine was 10' X 14'. It sold for 5 grand a few years ago. It was supposed to be hand done by a group of religious women.

    Hi,
If I remember correctly there were 16 stitches to the inch. It was the waviness that attached me to the rug in the beginning. I thought a perfect "Art Deco" looking rug for my
    bedroom.

Thank you all for your help! I get the impression I shouldn't sell them for 20 bucks each. Greg, it's nice to know you had one so large, I'll bet it was gorgeous! I"m still struggling to learn more about the women who made them. It will help when the time comes to sell, plus I enjoy learning the story behind special things. It's sad when the history is lost.
