Ok so i picked this up today because I liked the painting. But I started noticing that it was signed twice and it's mounting was amateur to say the least it had been cut off at the top of the board, glued to a matting and then duct taped in to the framing. Now after going over it with a fine tooth comb I am noticing there are pencil sketch shells on the beach along with the pencil signature and one signature is dated 75 the other 02? Do you guys think the artist may have come back 27 years later and add the poorly drawn shells and signed it in a different signature? Has anyone ever heard of this artist? Take a look if you don't mind and let me know that you think...

I "think" the "H. James '02" may have been the original painter (maybe in 1902) and then another "James" (which could have been either a first name standing alone or a surname) came along in '75 (1975?) and did the horrid (sorry about that word) shells on the beach.

Wonder if "James '75" was a descendant of the original "H. James"? One reason I say that is because the "James '75" is signed in black (like the black seashells) and the "H. James '02" looks like it is signed in a shade of blue which matches some of the lovely blue foliage growing up around the column near the top left of the painting.

I'll post dome better clearer pictures of the signatures here in a bit. I don't know if it's old enough to be 1902 I'll also post some pics of the back the wood just doesn't look old enough to me but I'm by no means an expert on that.

Ok so i used a magnifier and natural light to capture the signature I am still leaning towards the '02 being in pencil. I don't know how far back this manufactured wood dates back being used but the patina just doesn't say old to me?

To me, the James '75 looks like the original signature and would date the painting to 1975. That makes sense based on the colors and style. H. James '02 does look like pencil, which also makes sense based on the bad penciled additions (sorry, but they are bad.) So either the original James came back and messed up his picture or his younger relative inherited the painting and added their own touches. The green designs on her dress and the shading behind her arm look like colored pencil additions.
