One of my favorite dishes is shepard's pie; ground beef, mash potatoes & corn stacked all pretty...then you smash it all together & enjoy - even Kentucky Fried Chicken has a version of it now!
PS - Sorry late answer; I actually forgot about this until someone pointed it out when I asked about some more Hawaiian prints I found by the same guy (Edward Savage it turn out)!:

Grrr! The whole bunch of you!! (And all my children would be laughing hysterically about now!)

First of all SHEPHERD'S Pie is made of lamb. The shepherd tends to the LAMBS! ("Pard" used to be dog food; don't know if it is still arund.)

Secondly, what you describe is COTTAGE Pie, made of minced mystery meat or hamburger, whatever.

Now I don't care what you have left over that goes into the Cottage Pie, but the Good Shepherd adds to the lamb, chopped onion, some peas and carrots, and a tad of turnip if you have some around, and gravy. The whole is topped with a huge, snowy pile of mashed potatoes, and soothed over with a well-buttered knife.

    (And I LOVE sweetbreads.) :)

98.3 per cent of this country doesn't either! Including the restaurants!

(My other pet peeve is "nauseous vs nauseated." One can BE nauseous, one must become nauseated! Same percentage. :( )

I am so guilty of this one ("nauseous") and didn't even know it was a problem until watching some show this very week (probably CASE HISTORIES, with Jason Isaacs, but not 100% on that).

Shepherd's pie is properly lamb, but I dispute the idea that turnip belongs anywhere near human comestibles! Turnips belong in the pig trough. Most places in the US make what they call shepherd's pie with ground beef and corn. Just call it old school keyword spam.

A tad is a tad too much, in my opinion. Nasty things, are neeps.

Evelyn, I just read the write-up in The Guardian re: neeps. :nailbiting: And Swedes. And a few other peculiar edibles. Really funny!

Some things are desperation food. I'd put most shelf stable heat and eat products in the same category.

    CORN? Burn the heretics!

Since when did shepherds herd cows, too.

A turnip is a fine thing in a proper Cornish pasty.

I eat roasted turnips on a regular basis. By choice. :jawdrop:

Roasted turnips are rather nice, as are roast parsnips and swedes.
