Isn't the lady in the ski outfit the Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson? This picture was taken in 1935 before they were married, in the Netherlands. I think a photo of Wallis would be worth a few dollars....haven't seen yours on the internet! Did you look a the back of the photo?

 

That right there looks like a vintage recliner!!!

 

I am pretty sure that is Wallis Simpson. They did ski.

 

It would be marvelous if it was, but I tend to doubt it seriously & I am not very good at ID'ing folks from photos. I did take it apart & there was nothing written on the back.

It came from an estate of a lady who lived in a small town called Camden which is east of Columbia, SC. I do know they were "horse people" & I think may have lived in England at some point. One of the things I got was a Fortnum & Mason wicker basket.

Yes, I knew them as colonial chairs, but apparently they are called Morris chairs...

Problem solved;

 

I can't blow it up to get a good look, but I don't think it's her either. Just some 1930s ski bunny.

 

I got this beautiful Japanese doll for 5 Euros today. The condition is a pure disaster, but I intend to do as much restoration as I am capable of. I just could not leave her there to rot, abandoned and unloved
Is there silk experts here? I wonder if there is a way to remove spots on her face without removing the paint.

They were hand-carved somewhere in Franconia (roughly corresponds to the territory of the modern state of Bavaria).

 

Try a bit of spit on a cotton bud. That might clean her face.

The house cleanout topics on this forum make me really curious on how estates are disposed of and where their contents really go. I wonder how many sellable antique items are disposed of by clueless heirs and unknowledgeable junk removers.

Here in the states we have auctions, estate sales, and thrift/consignment shops but there doesn't seem to be enough of these venues to account for the vast amount of used goods that should be entering the market. Makes me wonder how much stuff is disposed of to the landfill without antiques and sellable items being removed.

When my grandmother passed away years ago, she had a closet filled with lovely clothes all in great shape and nice quality. Not antiques but vintage. I simply did not have the room to take them. I was being pushed into clearing her stuff due to other PITA family members.

I only took a few things to remember her by. I have her rocking chair which I know is at least 60 years old. It is smaller than today's chairs and has cranberry velvet on the back and seat. I cried and laughed in that chair many times growing up. It was a piece of me that I had to take back to my place.

I can not count the number of pieces of sterling silver that I have taken out of the trash. When I was working in Paterson NJ the number of antique cast iron and wrought iron, stained glass windows and 4" thick solid mahogany doors and furniture that was put out for the trash every week was never ending. It was such a terrible end of town that no one wanted to drive around and trash pick. I used to walk the five block area from the bus to the hospital and still was able to drag pieces home. When I started to drive I was able to save larger pieces. I was only going there two to three times a week and saw 25 room Victorian mansions being tossed into the trash piece by piece.
