“Our department curator replied me saying that your vase is likely to be by the same artist, or from the same studio, as the Burke vase. It was only tentatively dated 18th century but may actually be 19th century. The signature, of course, reads, "Masayuki" and that is about all he can tell you.“

That beats a museum copy all hollow.

Interesting that now the curators say 19th as opposed to the 18th in their website.

Googling "Masayuki Japanese bronze" this came up:

"Vase of cast bronze with a high relief design of an inquisitive snake avidly setting his sights on a neighboring frog. Signed on the reverse by the artist, Masayuki. Meiji era, late 19th century."

Yeah, I saw this but a lot of netsuke pieces come by that name too.
The MIA reply: The signature, of course, reads, "Masayuki"

    of course?
Wonder if Masayuki is an artist name or something else.

Yes, there may have been more than one Masayuki. But I thought the shape and decoration of this vase looked very much like yours. "Of course" may just mean - obvious if you read Japanese.

It's a guy's first name - I Googled it. Odds are there were lots of them.

Kard, now that you have the email, I would include it as 'history' and just give the artist's name. I think it's worth more as a non-museum vase! :cat:
