Featured Celluloid? Catalin? Clueless?

I bought this in a lot, completely expecting it to test positive for bakelite, and I was surprised when it tested negative! The lot it came with had a cigarette odor, so I cleaned it to be sure that wasn't influencing the simichrome test, but it still came back negative.

Any suggestions on what it is? I've looked for something similar on ebay, but I have little confidence in a lot of the auctions as they seem to put every type of plastic under the sun into the title assuming they're all one in the same! (Think "Early Plastic Lucite Catalin Celluloid Bakelite Brooch"! LOL).

Just cause it aint bakelite don't mean it won't sell, just had a plastic rhinestone bracelet sell for 360.00...blew me away. It went to my daughter though, listed it on her account. She was happy. It was hard to tell though we all are getting HINI or something horrid

 

Some of the old lucite pieces are getting hot, or you just may have run into a good old-fashioned bidding war. I don't recognize it, but that doesn't mean much. It does look like celluloid to me, and those old celluloid bangles with the rhinestones glued in can sell for real money. This one looks painted for good measure, and mint condition paint on a piece that old just ups the price tag. That price surprises me too, but if you had two collectors, or three, who all were missing just that one piece and were going to keep bidding until the got it....score!

 

It had a little carving too, when it ended I went in the ebay supply room and it was dark and it really shined, the triangles really showed out in the dark

Wow, $360?! That's awesome! I never would have expected that for that bracelet. The carving on it is different though and pretty.

Wow, I need to pay better attention to the plastic brooches I come across. Looking at some of the celluloid older brooches on ebay, I see things that I would have written off as cheap plastic, and they are going for fairly good prices.

I doubt that black would be as appealing. I wasn't even going to photograph this. It was in a box from some long gone relative.

Celluloid and rhinestone pieces were popular for a while. I've seen bracelets made the same way; the trick is finding them intact. The stones like to run away sometimes, and celluloid is tricky stuff. It'l be find one day and cracking to pieces a few days later.

 

I learned one lesson about celluloid the hard way.

Modern soft plastics, like the cheap compartmentalized boxes sold at JoAnn's, will cause the celluloid to disintegrate. I destroyed some really lovely celluloid buttons storing them in those boxes.

Regular grocery store plastic bags. like ziplocks, may do the same thing. Not sure about that, though.
