    Frame measures 34 inches by 29 inches. Dated 1856 by "WA YOUNG" There was a small piece of paper on back that read, "Ancient Castle W.A. Young 1856 Royal Academy Suffolk Street England." I fully understand truths get diluted after 160+ years and who knows where this painting came from. I can't find much on the internet. Hopefully, some of you might shed some light! THANKS :)

    I think it would be accurate to call this a painting of a Ruined or Ancient / Abbey or Cathedral.

    In 1856 an artist named W. Young did exhibit at The Royal Academy, but not in 1852-55 or 1857-60 (then I stopped looking).

    I think @Roaring20s has found the available information. Assuming him to be the art historian mentioned in that first link, and working at the V&A, he would have had "ins" to the art world.

    It is a charming painting, but naive... lacking the finesse of a better trained and more professional hand.

    @Roaring20s THANKS for the info!
    @moreotherstuff I agree. It's good, but not THAT good!
    @komokwa Just got it at a local auction. Had to get a "loan" from the ATM for $60

    The RA Summer Show takes art from all sorts of people, so it's quite feasible it was exhibited.

    "Suffolk Street " was the location of the gallery of the Society of British Artists who held open exhibitions.
