Antique cupboard with hidden drawers - age / value / use enquiry

I have come across this today and bought it can anyone tell me age value and what it would have been used for?

That was my thought too. But my first thought was very high end file cabinet. A secret compartment goes better with home library/study use. The idea of vertical files was a breakthrough in the history of paperwork.

 

The right height to reach into when you're seated at your desk.

Thank you, unfortunately the veneer is too damaged, it’s going to be restored and painted, then it will hold all of my jewellery/watches!

 

Would anyone be able to tell me an approximate year?

 

I'd have figured this for a lingerie chest; the drawers in a cabinet were popular at one point .. 1920s-1950s someplace. @verybrad would know better than I would, but the lock with a key makes me think earlier. It would be dead perfect for jewelry.

 

Some lingerie that needs to be locked in! I could so use something that way for my own jewellery, distributed all over the place.

 

Charmed as I am by the lateral file cabinet (Who knew??!!); I'd certainly utilize it for ladylike unmentionables. (And perhaps the emeralds...)
