It’s “lightly built” and the top of the seat only sits about 14” off the floor. It’s got a tag underneath, “The Ford & Johnson Co”. I haven’t been able to come up with anything exactly like it via image search. I haven’t had a chance to really scrutinize it but it seems like there may have been some repair involving the brackets that tie the back to the seat...it’s not appearant in the finish, just both sides are not completely symmetrical. I’ll have to get another look, but it made me wonder. Any info re age or value would be appreciated. Thank You!
Does the label have an address? They moved, it may indicate time period. Please include photo of label. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_and_Johnson_Chair_Company
To me the chair back doesn't appear original to the rest of the chair, anyway that was my first reaction ... Joy.
At only 14" inches from floor to seat it would be very difficult for an adult to sit in at at that height. I think it is a childs chair that has an adult sized replaced chairback . Even the wood is different. Joy.
Maybe. I read somewhere that some of these were called “sewing rockers” or nursing rockers...lower to ground = easier to reach into the sewing bag....not sure how legit that info is but I read it on the internet so... I’ll get some detailed pics this weekend.
Because it's on the internet doesn't make it true .. lots of garbage is posted there. Just the thought of a woman seated on that chair with her knees up to her chest trying to then "reach down" to get to a sewing bag makes no sense whatsoever. ... Joy.
Nursing rockers could be maneuvered with one arm for obvious reasons, either because they folded up or because they were smallish/lightweight. I think Joy's on to something here. That low to the ground, the piece would have to be for a child.
If a woman sat in that chair to nurse her baby, knees up to chest, then baby would have no chance of getting to the food source, in fact she'd have trouble even holding baby ... Joy.
Yes. It’s not s small chair exactly, it’s a pretty normal height...just a low seat. I’m going to get into it more this weekend and report back. Thanks to all for all the help and opinions!! I really appreciate it!!
