I was able to inspect it in person at the auction pre-view, in a not-so well lit garage of the home where the contents were being sold.

I knew what I found in the box, the second I spotted it, but as I looked closer my excitement waned

It appeared pretty obvious that the sterling was showing dark through a gold plated layer worn thin. I figured it’s best days were in the past and as I sat watching the online auction progress on my phone, I kept reminding myself to bid accordingly.

I won, even though I went higher than I had previously convinced myself that I would.

I picked up the box on my way home from work. Turns out there was more sterling in there, albeit scrap quality.

On a whim, and realizing I might make the exposed silver MORE visible through the gold, I decided to gently polish with some simichrome and see what happens

turns out, the tarnish was on the surface of the gold (no silver showing). Polish away!!!! It’s not as gold as it may have been originally, but it’s now in much better shape than I found it

So I went from a very used and worn looking Rams bypass to what you see below

Just, simichrome polishing could have worn off the gilding you were either cautious, either lucky!

Tarnished Vermeil is the only thing on which silver cleaning dip can be useful...
