I think the front decoration is original. Don't see why not. It looks like that ship is done on leather?

No reason why the ship can't be "incorrect" for whatever reason, but still original to the piece. As Moreotherstuff said above (twice), "Don't see why not." Why not indeed?

Well based on the comments so far and from what I have observed on the desk myself my summary is:
    1) 1920's
    2) Design: Spanish influenced with a splash of fantasy and someone might have touched up the colors IE: crows nest powder blue
    3) Also it looks like there was a sticker on the back(top middle) which might have been the makers??

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Welcome to Antiquers, @dave1950 -- earlier in this thread I think you were asking what people thought about the color being applied later. (You were not asking if the picture was carved later, were you?)

To me it appears that some or all of the color is not original to the piece. It looks sort of iridescent to me, and I'm not sure that goes with the style and era of the rest of the piece. I do like it. Very unusual!

thx @figtree To me the carving looks original bit the coloring looks like an add-on, but my knowledge of old furniture is very limited and my search on secretary desks found nothing even close to this to do a comparison.

Poking around a bit, suspect the design is based on a Spanish Colonial vargueno/bargueno desk. On the paint colors, they wouldn't be atypical for the 1920s-40s era Spanish style furniture, have seen similar on Monterey-style pieces and carved Mexican furniture as well...
