Abandonment issues, Arties! but Verybrad gave me directions here, so it's all good! :)

I decided to buy a piece of Wilkie's work at an estate sale I'm working at. They have pieces by Wilkie and Frank Whipple. I liked her style better, but having trouble finding any information to compare the two.

I know they both did miniatures of nuns in whimsical situations. I don't know who emulated who. She was born 1903 and I found articles (couldn't access them) about gallery shows for them both in late 60s in Central California and a couple easy to find auctions for her, but that's it. It looks like Whipple is still producing replicas of his work. I don't really care, I like her painting, but would like to clear up the confusion!

I rarely buy expensive items at sales. To find a bargain I have to wait for the last day discount, so usually I gather a squirrel-pile and end up putting it all back, but I'm gifting myself, so I'm ok with paying their price.

Nice to see this site! Thanks for any information aka thelma and shilo - two familiar names that floated up!

    Thanks, Brad!

Missing post: I'm mostly confused about overlap of images between the two artists. The picture I'm looking at (sorry no images) has about 5 small pictures that duplicate images I see in Whipple's work. Two are shown above: woman nude, nuns playing tic tac toe on a barn, shown above.

Hello, I am also researching Joan Wilkie and have been unable to find any biographical information on her. Please let me know where you found her date of birth (1903) and is there anything else?

    Hi art collector!
I just saw this as I was posting my own question and surprised to see I didn't include an image of my Wilkie. I guess I must have posted it before I bought it at the end of the estate sale. I'll include one later...
    Have a nice Friday PM

The thing I love about this piece is having 5 vignettes, not just one :).

I believe the top three "paintings" are Whipple and the center bottom is Wilkie.

Funny thing is, the piece I included (at the top of this thread) I believe (by the rounded whimples) to be Whipple, but includes the nude, which is Wilkie...so many
    W's!

Still very confused why these two artists did work so similar and who was 1st - Whipple's site gives copy on his original inspiration.

As a research backup, I had saved my Firefox history since FOREVER, but it must have finally gotten lost through computer bombing out.

I didn't record the research I did last August. I'm unable to locate the newspaper article that mentioned Wilkie and Whipple as exhibiting at the same show in Fresno, late 60s... as best I remember it. She is listed as Australian 20th C, so assume she passed and was older than Whipple - he's still selling prints.

And some examples of Wilkie's work at auction (last three and next page)

I'm researching a painting that has a COA attached from the Union Square Galleries at the St. Francis, 320 Geary Street, San Francisco dated January 28, 1993. The 8 x 9-1/2 inch oil on canvas was valued at $950 then. Sad to think that the artist just disappeared! No biographical information anywhere. I wrote to a couple of art registries in Australia and will post whatever I hear -- if anything. The painting is in a private collection and I have a privacy agreement, so can't post the image but can describe. Two nuns in a museum gazing up at a painting of a draped seated Renoir style nude. Perhaps Wilkie inspired Sister Wendy of PBS fame!
