    Hi,
I have this copper container that I believe is lined with lead. It is heavy, 2lbs 5oz, 6 1/2"L x 4"H x 4 1/2"W. I would have thought maybe a container for candies, but with the lead lining I'm wondering if something else. No marks anywhere but looks to have some age to it.
Any ideas or information is appreciated.
    thanks for looking.

Hi Shiloh, nice to see you!
Could be tin, I thought lead because it is heavy for the size. Does this look like a home crafted piece to you?

That is a common practice from Turkey through to India. The tin lining is to prevent corrosion of the copper from whatever is put inside. The ones made last week look just like the ones made in 1868.

I like the design on this one.
Thanks Terry - so could have been made yesterday. I've seen the ones made recently and can usually spot them but haven't seen one that is lined so thought it had some age.

That one probably is a little older. In the thirties and fifties copper was cheap so heavier gauges may have been used then.

Generally, the cruder they look, the newer they are.

The white crust in lead oxide. They probably didn't intentionally use lead but had a lead tin mix given to them when buying tin. The source was probably things like old toothpaste tubes.

The copper on the outside has very little patina and doesn't look like it has been polished.
