Can someone read Hebrew?

I'm afraid that it might need a Hebrew to German translator ... Does Google have one of those?

Usually don't buy books that I cannot read ... but this one 'felt' so old I just had to. Even if I just turn around and sell it ... just wanted it in my possession for a bit.

Got it home and found that I was opening it from the wrong end! Doh! Leather binding seems in fairly good shape for being nearly 200 years old ... original or rebound?

Can someone read the Hebrew part so I can try to research this further ... I can see the date 1817 ... and Wien ... Vienna. Printed by Anton Schmid ... but I get some gobbledegook about German landscapes and oriental printers????

    Thanks
    - Kat

Zemiroth Israel is Jewish Songs, roughly. Could this be the Psalms? David's harp is on the front page.

Thanks for translating that much, Evelyb! I'm getting a little (OK, a lot) frustrated by the hebrew keyboard and google translator I'm trying to use.

The bottom of the page are the printing credits:

gedruckt bey Anton Schmid h.k. priv. und N.O. Landschaft; deutsch und orientalischeir Buckdrueker 1817

Printed by Anton Schmid H. K. priv. and N.O. landscape; German and orientalischeir Buckdrueker 1817

Here is a very similar book with Anton Schmid printing credits and a woodcut pic - not the same pic as in yours.. I'm having trouble with the text on the eBay page. All the text/description appears overlapping in my browser. I think it is saying something about 2 books of Chronicles in the Old Testament???

"The two Books of Chronicles(Hebrew:דברי הימים‎ "The Matters of the Days";Greek:Παραλειπομένων) are the final books of the Hebrew Bible in the order followed by modern..."

I don't understand this for 1st and 2nd Chronicles are in the New Testament. Anyways the book on eBay may be one of the books and yours the other. Maybe you can make it all out.

Wow, Komokwa ... Thank you so much for that Lexilogos website! Sooo much easier, but by no means EASY, to use than what I was trying.

Actually was able to translate a few lines that made sense ... yay!

This should keep be occupied for a while ....

And yes, Susan - that ebay listing book does look related .... Anton must have been super busy cranking out books in 1817 ... I found a third similar book that was neither mine nor the one you found.

Ladybranch - Chronicles are in the Tanach (OT), not the New Testament. They're right before I Kings. It's an account of the kings of Israel and Judah. I think you were thinking of 1 and 2 Corinthians, which are letters to the church in Corinth from the Apostle Paul.

Fidbald, thank you for clearing up what those abbreviations meant. It never crossed my mind to search out Anton Schmid's history ... thanks for that nudge too!
