Featured Chinese? Puzzle Ball; 12 Layer, I Think...

~65mm, 74gm...3 dragons. I have spent 10 minutes or so trying (with little success) to align the holes in the layers so an accurate count of them could be made. There has to be a way, but I'm stumped.

I get 3 dragons by counting the eyes, then dividing by 2. I'm no more capable of following the devious writhing an' squirming of them than counting the layers within. Puzzle Ball, indeed!

It may have been made as recently as yesterday for all I can tell...'tho I've had it for 5 or 6 years. That's another part of the puzzle; have I got something worthy of interest, or a modern, relatively mass-produced bauble? I'm no wiser for hours of fondling it, rolling an' turning it, marveling at the details an' the time it took to produce.

I have shame; in a response to that post, I said I would post pics of my bronze crab, 'tho it has a detached leg. I have failed to do so, and my lame excuses are sloth and crummy memory.
