    It's my understanding that the required taxes were paid and the piece was duly marked before the work was actually completed, and that the marks could be distorted, and partially, or even fully, erased in the final finishing.

    stracci- what a wonderful narrative your sterling spoon has spun (NM antique mall !) .great find & life lesson-beware pawn,coin shops,etc.could need eyes on from a museum.
    PS-Also thanks for the clear (pictures yes) lesson for me on ID'ing silver.

    You may be right! The missing assay marks don't really faze me, I'm just happy the maker's mark is there. Along with the mysterious 1769!
