    Hello,

I am not very familiar with bronze works so I am hoping someone here with a bit more knowledge can help provide me maybe with some more keywords to research this piece further. Its a bronze (with some weathering) Diana figure. It seems like it would be part of a clock but there is no way to attach it to anything (base or otherwise). It is unsigned and hollow. Inside there is a paper labelled marked "M". Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

    Why is it Diana?

Looks like spelter to me. Probably a figure that sat atop an old mantle clock.

Sorry, should have read your entire post. I see you knew that already (clock part).

Goddess looking with a bow and arrows on her back.. Id say Diana.

I said bronze because on the areas that the patina has been rubbed away there is a golden color underneath but I think you may be right.

Bronze is pretty expensive,so when you see a casting that is rather crude or badly done, chances are its pot metal coated with brass . At least that's how I was taught. Google some bronze statues and compare the difference in quality.

Agree, it looks to be spelter, also called white metal or pot metal. If you scratch the bottom it should look silvery. Bronze won't do that. However they do sometimes put a layer of bronze on top of spelter to make it appear 'richer'.

That definitely makes sense! Thank you all for your input.

    Hi,
Here is the top of an old Seth Thomas mantle clock.

They aren't attached. They just sit on top of the clock.

Mine is the muse with the harp, but I never remember her name. This clock was my mother's and she always sat on it. My aunt had one with red columns and that went to someone else in the family. My daughter covets this and it will end up being hers = some day. Not yet!

    Hi Bev,
Your clock top is called Terpsichore. She is the Muse of the lyre and dance.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I now realize that I should look for a top for the mantle clock I bought a few years ago. Even if it's not original, I like the way they look.

Your Mom must have been a petite woman. How uncomfortable for her! I'm sorry, Bev. I had an "irresistible impulse," shades of Anatomy of a Murder.
