I got this locket in a lot of jewelry I purchased from the UK. Old photos I believe to be 1920's to 30's. Behind the photos on each side of the locket are four hash marks, or lines. Does anyone know what the significance of these are? Thanks in advance!

They *may* be the way the maker ensured that the 2 sides went together, but I've never seen jewelry marked that way myself.

My husband collects Zippo lighters and they use similar marks to indicate the date, they started with dots and then used hashmarks like this. I thought *maybe* it could be something similar? @Any Jewelry, are you busy?

Crazy coincidence. A locket I purchased recently has similar marks on the inside as well. Mine is alpacca.

It looks like a lot of the design was stamped in by hand. Someone did an awful lot of work on it.

Nah, just hanging around looking at threads.:D
I have seen these marks before but don't know the answer, sorry. I always thought it was what Bakers said, a way of knowing which parts were a match.

Does it have British silver marks btw?
Fern leaves always remind me of New Zealand, which doesn't mean to say this is NZ made. A lot of jewellery for the New Zealand market was made in the UK or Australia, but they also made some locally.
Jewellery tends to travel the globe, I occasionally find old New Zealand jewellery here in the Netherlands. It is also found in the UK, for obvious reasons.

Roman numerals? The first one is 7, the second, 19.

No marks anywhere. It did test positive for sterling though.

    So likely not British made.
I am still hoping for Down Under, of course.;) You never know. Australia and New Zealand made sterling jewellery.

I strongly suspect this is where someone tried to test it once.

That's so interesting that Barn Owl's locket has almost the same exact set of marks. Maybe matching top and bottom as Bakers suggested? I really have no idea!

Incidentally, no reason it won't be silver. Small things were often not hallmarked.

Background to the woman looks like Brighton.

Rumor on the Internet says the ferns design would be from the aesthetics period. Anyway this makes sense?

It does. The original design is very much Victorian anyway. There is some symbolism concerning ferns, but I don't remember what it is.
But I am still hoping for a NZ connection.:)

Maybe just a trick of the photo, can you post a picture of the edge where you open the locket?

Ferns are Magic, Fascination, Confidence and Shelter. Designs continued and still do, so whilst this might look a tad Victorian, there's no reason it can't be contemporary to those photos.
