    Hello,

I'm having trouble identifying an object under the carriage in this tintype.

Any ideas of what it might be?

Thank you as always in advance!
    Warm Regards,

It almost looks like a milk can from a dairy farm. I can't understand the "strapping?" (for lack of a better word ) along the upper side though, unless this was before dairy farm milk cans had a metal handle (or handles) attached on the side(s) of the cans.

Nice four-generations photo -- and that baby is very cute, even when not smiling.;)

See I thought the exact same thing. The strap going into the can doesn't make much sense though. Confused :/ lol

I'm going to guess it's a leather case with a rounded top and a shoulder strap. For baby supplies. I've never thought about it before, but what did moms use for a diaper bag in that era?

I agree with Terry, it looks like a Milk Churn Bomb.
They were extensively used by the IRA in Northern Ireland in the 60`s & 70`s adopted from their forefathers.
Straps could have been a mounting device or a crude but effective time switch, fastened to wheels or axles.

Good example of the seldom-photographed family "fuss-not" bag. Victorians just didn't take all the backtalk etc. that parents get from their kids these days and started 'em out young by teaching 'em not to cry excessively. Prolonged crying spells caused the offending baby to be placed in the "fuss-not" which was then closed until the crying stopped. A number of famous people have mentioned in their biographies the lasting impact of their early "fuss-not" training, among them Adolph Hitler and Charles Manson.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I was also thinking it was a bag, but hadn't gone to look for photos. Good find, lauragarnet!

What a party group. Great-granny, Dad, Granny, Mom and resigned-expression baby. Plus the doctor's bag. Doesn't Great-granny look like she keeps everyone in line with that vicious point on the bumbershoot?

Let me amend that. The woman on the back right looks more like a nurse or a nanny by the clothing.
