Good Evening, was wondering if anyone knowledgeable on antique chests might be able to provide me some background info on this one I recently bought at a yard sale in Virginia. While I know next to nothing about them, a few items caught my eye regarding the chest: hinges, nails, handle, lock, the dovetail corners, and overall fine construction... just seemed to jump out at me and so I hope I did ok buying it. The dimensions are: 41"(W) X 22"(D) X 26"(H). I saw no markings or symbols indicating who built it or where it was made. Any info / insights would be appreciated. How very odd. Looks like two different chests.

I would say it is a very good chest/trunk , made from Pine.
Its not been stripped like many.
I don't think it has been used much and never went to sea.
The interior is prestine probably as it was used to store blankets at the foot of the bed and never really moved.

Ditto. Not unusual for blanket chests to look pristine on the inside.

Many Thanks for the replies and background info!! Any idea timeframe range as to when it might have been made and what the value might be?

Looks mid to late 19th to me, not earlier due to pieced wood (not a six board chest). Guess it was country made, not big city. Most desirable dome top chests are earlier and have original paint, so not huge demand or value, but nice authentic piece with a few replaced parts.

Nice chest and I am on board with a mid 19th century date. Would think a Scandinavian or Northern European origin.
