image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Hi all, I just got my second vintage piece on Etsy. Any idea which era is from? It has no marking anywhere so I have no idea. It's very pretty tho! Any info will be greatly appreciated!

You know which era is that from? The seller said it's from 1930s.

Need to see the underside incl sharp macro shot of bottoms of puttees' feet. It may be old as you say but can't see anything in the photos you posted that tell me it wasn't made yesterday morning.

Good pix, thanks. Look for signs of use, wear, oxidation etc. I see very little of any of those and think that unless somehow it was stored away in its original box, never handled... that it was made in late 20th/early 21st C. If u paid a big premium for vintageness, sorry but it's educational value to u was worth the money I'd guess.

Photos are showing up too tiny to see details, but there was a lot of this puttee/cherub stuff made in the 70s. I had a candle holder. I'm guessing this is the era, unless you show large enough photos to see details.

By the way, that would be "Vintage 1970" because vintage means the date of the piece, not that it's old.

Thx all. No, I didn't pay premium for it, I wouldn't dare to spend so much on a piece I'm unfamiliar with, since I'm still so new to all these. I am very curious though due to its condition, which is very good.

I would think this to be 60s at the earliest.

I just heard back from the seller after I asked her more info about how she dated this piece to 1930s. She said her dad who's an antique appraiser actually dated it for her. She said he dated it to the 30s based on the weight of the metal, the thickness of the glass, style of the piece along with the provenance of the previous owner. Frosted glass goes as far back as the 1800's. This piece is indeed very heavy for its size. So I guess that can't be shown thru photos.

Interesting. The first three traits listed are kinda questionable. Reproductions of nearly everything can be bought somewhere or other-if those first three were indeed traits of a 1930's "original" assuming they were made back then, some place in China (or wherever) would duplicate them. If you want to think it is 1930's that's fine, since you didn't have to pay a lot for it, and you will probably get many different opinions. If you are going to continue buying, look into "signs of age" of antiques.

Yea, at this point I'm not sure what to think except it should be older than me. Lol! But in general I'm definitely interested in knowing how these sellers date their items, especially when there's no marking on the item.

You could fill a book with the answer to that question!

For an item that has no marking, there are things that experts look for. Older items often have a quality about them. Or there may be subtleties, things you would expect to see from a certain older piece but not a new one. It takes a trained eye.

As a side note, sellers on Etsy and Ebay often post incorrect dates. I've seen it hundreds of times. Sometimes well meaning, but just incorrect.

If you are new to the field, a nice way to start might be with marked things. Those are so much easier to research! Also just reading boards like this, what other people find and what other boardies have to say. It has certainly taught me a lot over the years.

    Best of luck!
