Found this copy of "Through The Looking Glass" at the local Salvation Army Store. Paid $1.00 for it. The story is in English, but the rest is Russian. Progress Publishers in Moscow, dated 1966. Worth a bit more than a buck! IMG_4280.JPG IMG_4281.JPG IMG_4282.JPG IMG_4283.JPG

I am guessing due to the style of the clasp, I would say circa 1960s, and due to the roundness and lack of blemishes. I have tons of pearls, not just what you see on the table, and the older styles tend to be akoyas. The freshwater craze seems to have started in the 80s with the rice pearls. When you go to the Pearl Factory places, where you can buy an oyster and have the pearl set in a piece of jewelry, they use akoyas. I have a few pieces of them from when I was in San Francisco in 2013, from Fisherman's Wharf. I have irregular akoyas, sort of baroque, too. The freshwaters, no matter how well made, are never as well matched or as perfectly round, in my opinion.

I'm not sure you can call them Akoya. Cultured saltwater almost definitely, but I wouldn't use a specific name unless you're really sure. There are other Japanese and Chinese saltwater pearls too.

    Thanks for the info Marko.

I usually do the tooth test with pearls, but beyond that, I just don't really know how to identify a good pearl.

Pickings have been slim this week, many trips to many stores and these are all I found.Probably not a bad thing, considering!
Belleek frame that cost me $3. I thought that stuff was dead in the water, but when I looked at ebay completed sales I was shocked. I have a soft spot for Belleek because of a long gone ex.

Last spring I went to a private home sale and bought a huge lot of sterling silver dirt cheap, went back to the same house today and got another large lot for under $100. The owners said they’d call me if they find more.
I told them I was getting a really good deal on this lot but they said they didn’t care, they’re emptying out their great aunts house to sell it and just want it gone.
I told them not to throw anything away, there’s no dumpster there so I’m hopeful they won’t.

The shade of pink is not right for coral. These are more likely to have been cut from conch shell.

The pale orange on these is consistent with coral. For a comparison of the two, see:

    I love these already.

How about those who never had children of their own to leave stuff to and doted on the one they willed to? My "great aunt" on my mother's side had only 1 child of her own who died at age 15. Mom was her only niece and the 2 nephews who survived were the sons of the brother to whom no one in the family had spoken for decades over some argument long past. Shit happens.
