I apologize, I completely misread what you wrote (half asleep ). I am very gentle with every piece but I can see how it sounds like I hacked it up.

 

And that's all I was getting at.

I once bought fantasy silver bars at an antique show.
I asked the dealer why there were scratches on the bars & was told they had been tested for silver content. Bought em anyways .....but found it strange they were tested in that rough fashion even though they were correctly marked.

Not everyone tests ....gently .....I guess..!!

I can kind of understand the deeper scratches on precious metal bullion only because the Chinese are producing fake bars (part silver part lead) by the truckloads which are filtering into the West via Ebay and other venues. So a light surface scratch will say silver but it could be full of lead. I can also understand on the non-decorative bullion piece since appearance doesnt matter. Although its kind of a waste to scratch test pieces that are simply solid silver as a density test would be just as effective without any damage to the piece.

 

I once saw them drill a huge bar on Pawn Stars !

 

OTOH it wasn't a "pretty" bar, and everyone wanted to make sure it didn't have a lead core. It was a serious payout for the guy who brought it in, too.

They especially scratch service pins etc and old jewelry...

 

$115,000 ...more or less.....but that was A LOT of silver !!!

 

Ive never understood why people bring items to that show.. wouldnt the person be better off going to a bullion exchange and getting 75-80% of the value as opposed to the 1/3 they normally offer?

 

It's called the Gold & Silver pawn shop, and they pay going rates for metal.
As for antiques and collectibles , that's another matter.

 

Pawn shops often pay good rates for precious metals. On the other hand they're in it to make a profit, so they don't pay rack rates for other stuff.

 

I bought 100 oz silver bars from Englehard back in the 80's....when I sold them back they were all core drilled.
Looking back, I erred, it was SWEST that were core drilled,I think my Englehards were ok? Benn so long ago. I wish I had saved a few, was 8.00 and change per oz.when I still had them and can't remember the price when we sold them but it was a HUGE loss.

 

Too bad you didn't buy and hold; it's about $16.50 now.

 

Would have been better to have held on to them when silver was in the high 20's.
