    Hello,

I was out and about and found this CDV today.

It's by Wilhelm Wendel of Brooklyn NY, which leads me to believe that the church is from Brooklyn?

There is a "Compliments of " stamp at the top, upside down and very faded.

I tried to get a photo of it. Any help would be appreciated as always!

    Warm Regards,

It may be the Jewish Synagoge on Clinton St. in Brooklyn. The following webpage has an 1853 newspaper pic of it. Need to scroll way down the page. Wellll, it is easier to say the 3rd pic up from the bottom:

Here's a link directly to it:

I haven't looked any further for more pics. Did find othe pics by Wendel that dated to the 1870s.

Here's a pic of it today. It is the oldest continuously operating synogoge on NYC. It was built in 1853. Congregation Chasam Sopher.

2nd up from the bottom. Click the thumbnail for a bigger pic:

Great work, Susan. It's changed quite a bit. You'd never recognize it as the same building.

I don't think that's a correct ID. I don't know what building this is, but there are major differences between the building in the CDV and the synagogue.

Yes there are, and there are major differences between the drawing of that synagogue in the 1853 and the recent picture even those 2 buildings are one and the same. That is why I said "It may be..." I thought the roof edge - dentil? no that's not the word I'm looking for, the edging indentations like that around a castle roof and and the doors in the newspaper picture were more like Scantic pic then the roof and doors in the recent pictures.

If they aren't the same place, then I definitely think Scantic's pic is that of a synagogue rather than a Christian church because of its style and lack of adornment. I also thought of a Masonic temple/lodge, because of its style and lack of adornment also; however, I couldn't find one like it.

Too bad we can't read the plaque on the wall next to the front door.

The word you're thinking of may be "crenelation(s)" --

No help. That looks like the ghost of a basketball hoop with no net above the door.

It looks churchy, but maybe it's a library or a men's club or something.

    Hi,
My first impression was a Synagogue in the Gothic style. For some reason I am getting vibes of it being in the Lower Eastside Manhattan not in Brooklyn.

I've been playing around with contrast and so on, to try to read the faded 'compliments' writing.. I think it actually says 'Complimentary'. And then possibly '... Co.' plus 'Christian Poor'? Or looking from a different angle, it could even be 'Oddfellows'... which is possibly consistent with the plaque on the wall? I've searched for images of buildings that could fit, but found nothing.

Thank you so much for the help! It does look like it says Complimentary, and Christian but unfortunately I can't make out the rest. I'm not sure what this piece is haha. A church? a synagogue? a Fraternal building? It's gotta be one of those! :)

I also see Complimentary. Like the rest of you, that 2nd line is nearly impossible. I think I might be seeing, operative word "think,"

    Mr. Br. or R. Ck/l-j/g/y---- Roo-/Boo- in ---many/Germany

The first letter of the word with oo definitely has 2 legs as opposed to only one for the letter P. The dashes are letters I have no idea of what they may beMine you this allll is purely a hint of what might be there.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Christian Rook or Christian Root, perhaps?

Br (Brother) Christian something. I think so, too. Maybe it's the chapel of a monastery? Or Episcopal. Is the Episcopal church the only one that uses a shield logo? That looks like a shield divided into four sections with images in each section.
